Canadian slopestyle competitor Mark McMorris won Canada’s first medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics with a third-place finish in the slopestyle event.

“All smiles,” McMorris said after the race. “This is truthfully a dream come true.”

McMorris, 20, was considered a favourite to win gold in Sochi but struggled during qualifying runs and sat in third place heading into the finals. The snowboarder was still feeling the effects of a broken rib he’d suffered two weeks ago at the X Games. Read more about how McMorris felt before and during the games here.

During the qualifying round, Morris lashed out against the judges after failing to advanced directly to the finals. Fellow Canadian slopestyle competitor Maxence Parrot, 19, echoed his sentiments after the final Saturday.

“I do think there’s some work to be done on judging… Especially with this contest.” He added that he wasn’t trying to use judging as an excuse for not getting a medal but that most of the marks were too low, including the ones given to McMorris.
